We believe that constructing ecologically sound buildings requires consideration of how the building will interact with its surroundings from the beginning of the design process. Viewing the building as a living organism with interrelating systems makes us aware that ‘bolting on’ an idea after the event can introduce inefficiencies.
Recently we have designed a ‘Zero Carbon’ dwelling that responds to its lakeside nature. It uses heavyweight materials to even out internal fluctuations in temperature and adopts ventilation towers where the extraction of warm stale air heats the supply of fresh air.
Another approach has been the use of prefabricated structural insulated panels (SIP) to achieve a very well insulated and airtight shell which virtually eliminates heating needs.
In these design processes the site has been a key informant in which approach we take. It has indicated whether the dominant system should be to conserve energy or to generate it; to include lightweight or heavyweight materials.
"Cumming Andertons’ forward thinking, imaginative approach has allowed us to design a ground breaking, sustainable Eco home in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside. Subject to planning consents, this property with be revolutionary for what is considered a traditional part of the country".
